Outdoor Tips: Tom Stienstra says one of the best short drive-and-hikes in the Bay Area is San Bruno Mountain, the big hill that rises 1,314 feet above the Cow Palace south of San Francisco. The drive alone provides excellent views, best of the South Bay and across to the East Bay hills and often to Mount Diablo. You can also add an unforgettable hike with the 3.1-mile Summit Loop. More info at SFGate.com SFGate.com also has a list of other Outdoor Events in the Bay Area and Beyond. For the next few months, you can get more than a glimpse of one of the most unusual animals in California wildlife. Each year, thousands of elephant seals come back to the beaches of Año Nuevo State Reserve, where hundreds of new pups will be born, and the adult males will duke it out with each other and find a female to mate with before returning to the ocean. More info at SFGate.com Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve, just east of Half Moon Bay, is a 3,000-acre preserve. If you’re looking for an easy out-and-back hike, take the Purisma Creek Trail; just follow the creek for a mile or two and then turn around. If you prefer a 7-mile grand tour with a series of ups and downs, continue along the Purisima Creek Trail, then veer up Soda Gulch and down Harkins Ridge trails. More info at WeekendSherpa.com The Curry Village ice rink in Yosemite National Park is one of the last remaining outdoor ice skating venues still operating in California; it opened November 27, on Thanksgiving Day, for the holidays and the 2008 - 2009 winter season. More info at YosemitePark.com The President’s Council on Fitness and Sports has unveiled a fitness test for adults on the Internet. It’s similar to one that students take each year, but instead of getting a certificate signed by the President, the adults can see how their scores rank nationally.
