Fishing Rods And ReelsROD & REEL COMBOSSELECT A PRODUCT SUB-TYPERods and reels come in many sizes and with many different components, lending their abilities to each other to make for a perfect fishing adventure. Understanding which rods and reels work together is something that comes with experience. If you are unsure of which type of rod and reel belong together, manufacturers produce combo sets which include rod and reel combinations that are suited for each other, effectively taking the guessing out of the equation. Though these rod and reel combos can be an easy fix, there are still a couple decisions that you’ll need to make when you purchase one. Again, what you select will boil down to your fishing experience and knowing what you’re fishing for. A good place to start is with the reel, and understanding which type of reel suits your ability. For the novice angler the recommended rod and reel combo would include a spincasting reel. Spincasting reels can be used in both fresh water and salt water and are the easiest to cast. Unlike all other fishing reels, the fishing line on a spincasting reel is encased (also called a closed faced reel) which keeps youth from sticking fingers in the middle of the fast moving line, and a trigger at the back end of the reel (at the thumb position) allows the user to loosen the line while casting with a simple push of the button. Because these reels are suited for the novice fishing enthusiast you may find more combo sets that cater to youth. Rod and reel combos which include spinning reels can also be used in both salt water and fresh water fishing. Unlike the closed faced spincasting reel, the spinning reel sits under the rod, and is open faced. To guide the line on the spool a wire loop, called a bail, directs the line during retrieving. The open face design allows the line to release from the spool easier than the closed face design. This combination of spinning reel and rod is the most popular of the combos and slightly more advanced than spincasting reels, therefore, you may find a larger selection of combo sets to choose from. Baitcasting (low profile or conventional) and fly fishing reels are for the more advance fisherman who is concerned about casting distance and accuracy. Anglers who use these types of reels are generally more experienced and may want to create their own matched set, which is why you will see fewer combo sets available. A favorite of fishermen, experienced or not, is the travel combo, or the multi-piece telescopic combo. These rod and reel sets are compact and store easily, making them a perfect travel mate. Travel combos will come with both spincasting and spinning reels. Combo sets are a great for the novice angler and are generally less expensive than purchasing a rod and a reel separately.
