FISHING LURES

SELECT A PRODUCT SUB-TYPE

Though many prefer to fish with live bait, lures are a popular choice of anglers. Lures, or artificial bait, are brightly colored pieces of wood, plastic, rubber, or metal, which are attached to the end of a fishing line and pulled through the water by trolling, spinning, or baitcasting. The bright, sometimes metallic colors of the lures, the erratic side to side motions (produced by the shape of the lure while it is being dragged), and the sound (also produced by certain lure designs) mimic the movement of smaller prey, and effectively create an illusion which larger fish find irresistible to nibble on.

Types of lures may include:

  • Artificial Flies which are used in fly fishing, are ideal for lakes and streams because they resemble insects that you might find floating on the surface of still waters. These artificial flies may be made from furs, feathers and threads, or any number of synthetic materials which are common today.
  • Bass Worms are made from plastic or rubber and resemble live worms.
  • Jigs combine weighted hooks, or lead sinkers with hooks (called jig heads), with some type of bait (either real or artificial). The bait may resemble the body and tentacles of a small squid, or a grub (a soft thick wormlike larva of certain beetle and other insects).
  • Crankbaits (also called plugs) are designed to dive under the water surface and move at higher rates of speed. Crankbaits can be made from rubber, plastic, wood, or other materials. These lures don’t just imitate the movement of fish of prey but have a realistic likeness to them as they are moving through the water. A hook is attached to both the tail and to the underside of the crankbait.
  • Spinnerbait or spinning lures (also in the jig family) work much the same as regular jig bait in that the hook is camouflaged by the tail of the lure bait - usually a hackle tail; and the weight of the lure allows it to sink into the depths. Spinnerbait get their name from a medallion like object (called a blade) which spins and turns as the lure is pulled through the water, attracting the fish with movement, sound, and reflective light.
  • Spoon Lures, which get their name from their spoon like shape, create a wobbling motion as they are pulled through the water, and attract fish with flashy colors that resemble fish.
  • Surface Lures have solid bodies made out of wood or plastic, carry one or two hooks, and have an eyelet at the front of the lure to attach the line. By design these lures imitate injured fish or insects that float on the surface of the water.
